This one-year program equips you with the skills, field experience, and exam preparation needed to lead with purpose. Choose from two flexible options: certification-only or a 30-hour M.Ed. in Educational Leadership through our partnership with the University of St. Thomas.

Principal as Instructional Leader candidates must successfully complete two state certification exams for the standard certificate. In partnership with the University of St. Thomas, candidates may pursue a 30-hour M.Ed. in Educational Leadership as well as the Principal as Instructional Leader certification.

Certification Only

The Region 4 Inspire Texas one-year Principal Certification program equips aspiring school leaders with the tools to inspire excellence among teachers, support student achievement, and build strong community relationships.

To begin, you must hold a master’s or other advanced degree from a regionally accredited university with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Eligibility requires either:

  • A 3.0 GPA on all coursework attempted at an accredited institution, or
  • A 3.0 GPA on the last 60 semester credit hours of coursework from an accredited institution.

 


Master of Education and Certification Track

We are excited to announce that we are partnering with the University of St. Thomas to bring a 30-hour master’s degree in educational leadership and certification opportunity.

UST DEGREE SEEKING APPLICATION

For admissions, you will need:
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university with a minimum overall or last 60 hours GPA of 3.0
  • At least 2 full years of creditable teaching experience and a valid teaching certificate OR be completing 2 years by the completion of the program
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in professional and community activities
  • Texas-certified school principal who will sign an agreement to serve as your site supervisor/mentor
  • Recommendation letter from your campus principal

International Candidates

If you are applying and your master’s degree or equivalent comes from a non-English-speaking university outside the United States, the following is required:

  • A university degree from outside of the U.S. must be evaluated, verified, and deemed equivalent to a master’s degree by an approved credential evaluation service. When requesting your credential evaluation from one of the approved TEA evaluation companies, please make sure to request it to include, GRADE by GRADE, GPA, and VERIFICATION. Please visit TEA website for a list of approved credential evaluation companies.
  • GPA: 3.00 Grade Point Average (GPA) or equivalent.
  • English Language Proficiency Assessment: Must be demonstrated before training by one of the following:
    • Verification of satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language-Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT). Applicant must take all four portions (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) for a score to be calculated. All four sections must meet the following criteria: The acceptable passing score on the Speaking portion is 24; Listening is 22; Reading is 22; and Writing is 21. To have scores submitted directly to Region 4, use our institution code 4805.
    • Please register at the Education Testing Center (ETS)
    • Information concerning the Texas Education Agency English language proficiency requirements, including new score requirements for the Test of English as a Foreign Language – Internet Based Test (TOEFL-iBT)
    • List of countries outside of the United States approved by the State for Educator Certification (SBEC).

Note: To appraise teachers using T-TESS, administrators must complete T-TESS Appraiser Training and AEL (Advancing Educational Leadership).

How to Apply: Principal Certification Program

Step 1: Submit Your Application

Complete the online application. A $100 non-refundable fee is required. Submit the following documents at least 15 days before the application deadline:

  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Official transcripts showing a master’s or higher degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Electronic transcripts may be emailed to transcripts@inspiretexas.net
  • Certified/notarized service record (minimum 2 years of teaching experience)
  • Letter of recommendation from your current principal or supervisor
  • Completed “Principal as Instructional Leader Candidate Aptitude” form
  • Completed Leadership Diagnostic Interview

(Include a self-addressed stamped envelope to have transcripts returned.) All applicants must undergo a criminal history background check. A new check is required if re-entering after 6+ months.

Step 2: Choose Your Cohort

Cohorts begin in January, April, July, and October. Select the start date that fits your schedule.

Step 3: Begin Training

Complete a one-year program that includes:

  • School Culture
  • Budget & Supervision
  • Internship Induction

Practicum

Complete 160+ hours of field experience with a mentor and field supervisor in an accredited school setting.

Step 4: Certification Exam

Pass the TExES Principal as Instructional Leader exam.

Once all requirements are met, we’ll recommend you for standard certification.
