Systematic, Explicit, and Intensive Reading Intervention

Reading by Design®: An Individualized Literacy Intervention is a systematic, multisensory approach aligned with research-based practices for developing literacy. This intervention follows an intensive, explicit, and cumulative design for remediation of reading and writing skills at all grade levels.

This comprehensive program addresses the following components:

phonological awareness,
sound-symbol association,
six syllable types,
written spelling patterns,
morphology,
syntax,
reading fluency, and
comprehension.

Progress monitoring and review lessons are embedded throughout the program to inform student progress and promote reading and writing automaticity. Reading by Design® may be used with students in kindergarten through grade 12 in a small, homogeneous group setting. (Teacher training required.)

Reading by Design® is a five-volume set that includes Volume 1 on the alphabetic principle; Volumes 2–4 covering the six syllable types, digraphs, diphthongs, vowel pairs, consonant clusters, special situations, and more; and Volume 5 focusing on Greek and Latin roots and morphology. Reading by Design® may be used for grades K–12 and is designed for program fidelity with instruction delivered 4–5 days per week using one 45-minute lesson per day. The program includes Mastery Checks for progress monitoring, placement within the program, and pre- and post-assessment, as well as Bridge Lessons and Review Lessons.

Reading by Design®: An Individualized Literacy Intervention, Vol. 0 All new material, available through virtual training sessions. This new resource is a volume of lessons designed specifically for students who will benefit from foundational alphabet skills, phonological awareness, oral language, fine motor, and listening comprehension before beginning Reading by Design®. This volume of 20 lessons may be used in part or in its entirety, depending on the student’s developmental needs. Take the Volume 0 training as an introduction to the program. Become Certified through the Reading by Design® Structured Literacy Certification Pathways The Reading by Design® Structured Literacy Certification Program is an International Dyslexia Association (IDA) Accredited Program, ensuring that completers have engaged in a rigorous, standards-based preparation aligned with the Knowledge and Practice Standards (KPS) for Teachers of Reading. Region 4 is proud to offer two structured literacy certification options to support educators in meeting the needs of students with dyslexia.
